Fafner(2004)

Fafner is a mecha anime series set on Tatsumiyajima, a remote Japanese island where life appears peaceful and ordinary. The island's teenagers believe their futures are secure, but they're living a lie. Tatsumiyajima is humanity's last defense against an alien threat—a hostile, incomprehensible enemy bent on destruction. When the invasion begins, the young people are forced to pilot Fafner, a giant robot designed to protect mankind's final sanctuary. As they fight for humanity's survival, these ordinary students must confront the weight of their impossible burden.
