When the Saints Go Marching In(1998)
When the Saints Go Marching In is a Japanese drama series that examines how society treats mentally-challenged youth and juvenile delinquents. The story centers on a group of teenagers enrolled in a work-study program designed to help them integrate into society. Behind closed doors, however, the students endure systematic physical and psychological abuse that their parents and supervisor, Ms. Hagawa, never discover. The narrative pivots on an unlikely friendship between Towa, an articulate but naive program participant, and Arisu, a rebellious schoolgirl from outside the program. As their bond deepens, both characters find strength to confront their personal struggles and challenge the system that oppresses them. The series offers a raw, unflinching look at institutional failure and the resilience of adolescents facing systemic cruelty.
