Nemuri Kyoshiro(1982)

Nemuri Kyoshiro is a samurai series set during the decline of the Tokugawa shogunate in Edo-period Japan. As the wandering swordsman travels west toward Kyoto, he finds himself drawn into a dangerous political conspiracy. The 12th Shogun's grip on power weakens as the Satsuma clan and thirteen Western lords grow restless and defiant. Minister Takebe, acting on orders from shogunate councilor Mizuno, moves to suppress the brewing rebellion. Kyoshiro, a solitary drifter with no allegiance to either side, becomes an unwilling player in a deadly game of power and survival. His journey west becomes a collision course with forces far larger than himself.
