Namuamidabutsu! -Utena- is an anime series that blends Buddhist philosophy with supernatural conflict. After a prince attains enlightenment and becomes Shaka Nyorai, saving the world, centuries pass into a degenerate age. Mara, an ancient force of suffering that once threatened Shaka's awakening, returns seeking revenge by corrupting humanity through worry and despair. To counter this threat, the Thirteen Buddhas—a divine team led by Shaka—unite with protective deities Taishakuten and Bonten to defend people from Mara's influence. The series explores timeless Buddhist themes of suffering, enlightenment, and salvation through an epic battle between celestial forces and the demon of doubt, with human lives hanging in the balance.
