Small Axe is an anthology series that follows interconnected stories within London's West Indian community from the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Each of the five standalone films examines the lives of friends and families navigating identity, belonging, and resilience during a transformative period in British history. The series captures intimate moments alongside larger social currents—from workplace discrimination to police brutality to cultural pride—that shaped the community during these decades. Director Steve McQueen brings a documentary-like precision to the narratives, grounding each story in lived experience rather than sweeping generalization.
