The Big Match is a British football television programme that aired on ITV from 1968 to 1992. Launched by London Weekend Television, it brought Football League match highlights to viewers on Sunday afternoons, filling demand for televised football that surged after the 1966 World Cup. The show offered ITV's answer to the BBC's Match of the Day, establishing itself as essential viewing for football fans across the country. The Big Match became a launchpad for major broadcasting talent, notably analyst Jimmy Hill and commentator Brian Moore. In 1978, ITV made a bold bid for exclusive league football rights in a move dubbed "Snatch of the Day." Though the Monopolies and Mergers Commission blocked full exclusivity, the BBC eventually ceded Saturday night coverage to ITV in alternating seasons from 1980 onwards, cementing The Big Match's place in British sports television history.
